When your kitchen remodeling project involves the construction work of adding space, removing subflooring or other major tasks, there are a few things to keep in mind to keep the members of your household safe and sane through the dust, noise and limited kitchen access. The process often takes anywhere from 4-6 months but will be worth it in the end!
If you or other members in the house become ill or get headaches from the construction dust, you may want to consider renting an apartment or staying with relatives is possible. Other contaminants such as paint fumes can also impose health issues. In addition to indoor air pollution, many people choose temporary housing because of workers stomping through the house daily, loud noises from equipment and having no access to a kitchen.
If you plan to live in your home during the renovation, setting up a make-shift kitchen might be the way to go. If you have room in your basement or garage, you can move your refrigerator and microwave there. If you have a deep freeze in your garage, it is a perfect spot for the microwave. Have some paper plates, plastic utensils and paper cups on hand to use since you may not be able to wash dishes.
Protect Your Furnishings
Construction dust can travel throughout the house and end up in other areas in addition to the kitchen. Before the work begins, cover your furnishings and floors with plastic sheeting to keep it dust-free. Turn off the heating and air conditioning to keep dust and other contaminants from circulating through the house via the duct work.
Many people often forget these household members! If your pet attacks strangers, is very small and can be stepped on or likes to escape through an open door, make sure they are properly housed in a kennel or gated area while workers are in the home. Limit their access in the house during the renovation. Nails can get stuck into paws which can lead to severe injuries requiring a trip to the ER, major pain for the animal and a costly medical visit.
