Winter Preparation Tips for Facility and Property Managers

Winters in Kansas City are usually unpredictable. However, there is always a good chance that bitter cold temperatures and moderate to heavy snowfall will occur.  This means every facility needs to be prepared.  All personnel involved with grounds and maintenance are responsible for keeping the grounds clean and safe. Below are a few tips for products and procedures to keep everyone informed and prepared.

Ice Melt and Heated Mats

When snow or ice accumulates rapidly while occupants are present, it is advantageous to make sure melting products are stocked.  Applying an ice melt is an important action to prevent slips and falls which can lead to serious injuries and costly lawsuits.

Many public facilities such as hospitals, nursing homes and schools are extremely susceptible to on-site injuries during inclement weather. Staff, visitors, patients and students are often on the premises at any given time.  To help protect them from potential injuries, heating mats are an effective solution.  Heating mats are affordable, portable and can help avoid liability and simplify maintenance work.

Snow Removal Plan

In addition to products that help keep your occupants safe, a detailed snow removal plan will ensure everyone is ready should a snow event threaten the area. Your detailed plan should identify snow removal personnel, who is available during an emergency and a list of staff to be called when the plan is activated.  A supervisor should be assigned to oversee the plan and execution.  Part of your plan should also include making sure all equipment from cones to snow plows are ready, easily accessible and working properly.  Key areas should also be outlined and prioritized such as sidewalks, entrances, parking lots and others so crews know where to start.

With a proper plan and products in place before the winter weather arrives, you can help prevent accidents and injuries at your facility.  If you are in charge of maintaining facilities such as schools, hospitals, or even an oil rig or commercial architecture firm, winter is a stressful time. Follow these tips to get your preparation underway.
